Flora Fauna Critters Crawlers

Crabs scuttle up and down the beach and are particularly active at night. TukTuk loves to hunt them. She has a small cleft in her tongue to prove it.

If you have ever been to a tropical island anywhere in the world, you probably know that things grow everywhere. Bugs, plants, animals, fish, these places are just choked with life. Fiji is no exception. Siga Siga Sands has a wide variety of creatures and colorful plants on the vast acreage.

Here are just a few of the things we’ve seen on our hikes around the grounds. I'm getting lazy from just sitting around in paradise all day so let's skip all the writing and just do a slideshow! Yay!

These frogs are everywhere at night. You can pet them and they just sit there. They like to sing in the spotlight.

Fruit bats are giant, not those wimpy little guys stateside. They are like a cross between a pterodactyl and an eagle. And they breath fire.

Kittens! They live under that bush there. They do not breath fire.

This bird was nice enough to pose in my Bird Studio Posing Area.

The Orange Mask Birdies (totally the scientific name) are all over the place here. They make sounds like R2-D2. They said they really like the Force Awakens trailer but did not pre-order tickets. They ignored my questions about the prequels.

Pink Frangipani are a fairly standard sight. They pretty and have a fun name.

Frangipani smells like grandma perfume but looks nice when placed behind Melissa's ear.

Don't know what these are called and too lazy to look it up. Let's just go with Yellow Cuppy Flowers.

Trees on the beach here need especially strong roots as the wind is pretty constant. Most days it's at least 10 mph and often closer to a 20-25 mph "breeze." Evidently they also like salt water.

A papaya tree, or, as the locals call it, pawpaw, despite me trying to correct them over and over. Sometimes it seems like they speak a different language here.

These mini-peppers are super hot. They will literally melt your tongue out of your face. My eyes started to burn just looking at them.

Melissa spotted this lovely chap before his beefy legs launched him away. The crickets play the symphony of the night here. You don't need tickets and they play whether you want to hear them or not.

Paper wasps are all over the place too. This particular one is no longer alive after Subash killed the shit out of him with a metal scraper used to remove its nest.

Subash is a kind soul though and let these bees live because they were wise enough not to build a hive on the cottage.

Very large Yellow Spiders build webs all around the property. Some are even larger than this guy. I wondered if they are poisonous?

Just kidding! They aren't poisonous.

Hope you liked the slideshow. There is a whole lot of stuff that we did't show, and don't know the names of, but that will eventually live on a Flickr page that you can peruse to your hearts content.

Let me know in the comments if I got anything wrong here because I love hearing how wrong I am about things. Or just say hi. Either way, fine by me.
